Scripture is right when it says in Psalm 133:1 (ESV) —1Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity! [1] If you have every played on a sports team, been in a family, church, or work place with strong unity and harmony you know how good and pleasant it can be.  But Jesus Himself also reminds us that The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy…( John 10:10 NET) Our enemy wants to destroy anything that is good and pleasant in our lives including unity.  When the devil attacks a relationship, marriage, church or any other institution or group he frequently attempts to demolish our good and pleasant unity first.  I believe he does this with what I will call “unity assassins.”  In this post I will discuss six of these unity assassins I see at work throughout life and would love for you to add to this list in the comment section.

  1. Pride and Arrogance- I have seen this assassin at work in the lives of Pastors, Priests, Teachers, Deacons, Doctors, Lawyers, Housewives, children, adults, the young, and old alike.  I have on more than one occasion seen these assassins at work in my life as well.  Anytime pride and arrogance are allowed to run lose it always leads to diminishing unity. If you don’t believe me read Proverbs 16:18.
  2. Un-Forgiveness- Forgiving those who hurt us is never easy so frequently we refuse to forgive.  When we choose this route any unity we have is at risk. Un-Forgiveness will destroy the unity of a family, friendship, for fellowship in a church.
  3. Me-itus or selfishness- This deadly unity assassin is easy to spot but often hard to stop. In Philippians 2:1-3 and Romans 12:3 Paul gives some good advice concerning those who are big-headed and selfish.
  4. Unbiblical Conformity-  Biblical conformity is when we encourage and promote people to be like Jesus.  That is a wonderful thing!  Un-Biblical Conformity on the other hand is man’s attempt to get everyone to look the same, dress the same, talk the same, read the same version of scripture, or sing the same songs in church. We think that limiting diversity makes us more unified but it actually destroys unity.  This man-made unity is surface, shallow, and easily destroyed.  In Romans 12:4-6 among other places we find that God’s kingdom consists of great diversity.  This diversity when allowed and encouraged to run free promotes unity.  However, when we limit diversity with unbiblical conformity we will always find that unity diminishes.
  5. Gossip- This is a real unity killer. Proverbs 16:28 says this deadly assassin “separates the closest friends.” Gossip never unifies it always separates and destroys unity.
  6. Cowardness- Our enemy like a roaring lion feeds on the weak, impatient, lazy, fearful, and complacent. I have seen more family, church, and relationship unity destroyed simply because no one was bold enough to stand up and say… ENOUGH THIS IS WRONG! This gossip is wrong, your prideful arrogant attitude is wrong, your bitterness and unwillingness to forgive is wrong, your manipulation to get everyone to conform is wrong, or your selfishness needs to be dealt with! It breaks my heart to hear Christians say things like…”I saw that divorce coming two years ago” Then why didn’t you do something? Or to hear pastors say “we saw that church split coming for years,” Then why did you sit by silently? In my experience Unity is such a powerful, good, and pleasant thing, that our enemy is not able to destroy it in a single moment in most cases. Almost always these unity assassins and others are at work for months, years or even decades before the unity is totally destroyed. But given the time to work, when we sit by scared to speak up he is able to kill, steal, and destroy those we claim to love.

Be on guard for these and other unity assassins in your life.
