The Enemy of Lordship

What does it truly mean to follow Jesus? Is it something we just add to our already busy lives? In this message, Pastor Pete shares the story of the explorer Cortez, who, upon arriving in the new world, made a drastic decision: he sank his own ships. Why? Because he wanted to remove any option for retreat. For his men, there was no turning back. It was victory or nothing.

This is a powerful picture of what Christ calls us to. Looking at Luke chapter nine, we see Jesus explain that following Him means we can’t have one foot in His kingdom and one foot still in the world. He calls for an undivided commitment. Just like Cortez, we’re invited to "sink the ships" of our old lives, our worldly comforts, and our personal safety nets.

Following Jesus is not about adding a new activity; it is about a total surrender. It is about taking up our cross daily and leaving no room for retreat. The question for each of us is this: what ships do you need to sink today to fully commit to the journey He has for you? True life is found not in holding back, but in going all in for Him.
