The Bread of Life Is Not Optional

“Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you.” - John 6:27

In our world, bread is optional. It comes in baskets at restaurants, sits on the side of your plate, or gets avoided altogether in trendy diets. But in the world Jesus lived in, bread was life. It wasn’t a side dish; it was survival. So when Jesus said He was the Bread of Life, He wasn’t offering an enhancement. He was claiming to be essential.

Too many of us treat Jesus like the breadbasket we pass on the table. We like Him, sure. He’s comforting, familiar, and nice to have around. But optional. We build our lives around work, family, ambition, success, and then ask Jesus to bless it. We fit Him in when it’s convenient. But Jesus says that’s not how it works.

He doesn’t want to be something extra. He is the main thing. He is the sustainer of your soul. Without Him, your spirit starves. That’s the point He makes in John 6. People came looking for another free meal, and Jesus turned the conversation. He told them to stop chasing food that fades and start seeking what lasts. He was talking about Himself.

You don’t need more distractions. You don’t need more temporary highs. You need Jesus. Daily. Desperately. Because only He can feed what’s starving inside you.

So here’s the question: Are you treating Jesus like your spiritual multivitamin, or your source of life? He didn’t come to decorate your life. He came to define it. To be your strength. Your peace. Your portion. Your daily bread.

You will find nothing else that satisfies like He does. No success. No relationship. No thrill. Nothing. Stop reaching for empty carbs when the Bread of Life is offering Himself to you every single day.
