From Sitting to Following
"As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, ‘Follow me.’ And he rose and followed him." - Matthew 9:9
Matthew was not looking for Jesus when Jesus called him. He was not praying or reading Scripture or showing signs of deep repentance. He was sitting in a tax booth, doing a job most people hated him for, when grace interrupted his routine.
That is how Jesus works. He steps into ordinary moments with extraordinary purpose. He did not wait for Matthew to get his life together. He simply invited him to follow. And Matthew got up. That’s what marked the change. He did not just hear the call. He responded.
Faith always moves. It does not just nod in agreement or feel conviction. It takes steps. Matthew went from sitting in his booth to walking behind Jesus. His life changed not because he made a speech or prayed a perfect prayer, but because he got up and followed. That movement is what turned his story around.
Some people wait for all the pieces to come together before they move. They want clarity, courage, and confirmation before they obey. But Jesus did not give Matthew a plan. He gave him a call. And the call was enough.
You might be sitting in your own version of the tax booth today, stuck in routine or wrestling with doubt or shame. But Jesus sees you. He knows exactly where you are. And He is still calling. Not because you have earned it, but because He is that good.
The question is not whether He is calling. The question is whether you will get up. Obedience always begins with a step. If you stay seated, you will miss the life He is leading you into. But if you rise and follow, everything can change.
