Your Identity Fuels Your Mission

"Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God..." – John 13:3

Before Jesus ever picked up the towel, He was secure in who He was.

That’s the setup for one of the most famous acts of service in Scripture. Jesus washing the disciples’ feet. He didn’t serve out of insecurity or to prove a point. He wasn’t trying to gain approval or earn His place. He served because He already knew exactly where He came from, what authority He carried, and where He was going.

John 13:3 shows us that identity comes before action. Jesus knew who He was, so no task was beneath Him. That changes how we see our own mission, too. When your identity is rooted in Christ, you don’t have to chase validation or avoid the lowly stuff. You’re free to serve in ways that seem unnoticed, unglamorous, or even humbling, because your worth isn’t on the line.

So many people are stuck trying to “do great things for God” while carrying a fragile identity. But when you know you are chosen, equipped, and loved by the Father, you don’t need a spotlight. You don’t need applause. You’re not defined by titles, positions, or outcomes. You’re defined by who God says you are.

That’s why Jesus could kneel down and wash feet. His security wasn’t in whether people understood Him. It was in the unshakeable truth that He belonged to the Father. And the same is true for you. If your identity is in Christ, nothing you do for Him is beneath you. Not the mundane. Not the difficult. Not the small acts no one else sees.

Mission flows from identity. When you’re rooted in Jesus, you’ll be ready for whatever He asks of you, even the towel.
