No More Excuses
"Jesus said to her, 'I who speak to you am he.'" – John 4:26
She didn’t expect a conversation. She definitely didn’t expect transformation. But that’s what happened when Jesus met the woman at the well. He broke through every barrier she tried to throw up, not with force, but with love. And we do the same thing she did. We offer excuses to keep Jesus at arm’s length. But He keeps showing up anyway, offering living water to those who will drink.
First, there’s shame. This woman came to the well at the hottest time of day because she didn’t want to be seen. Her past weighed heavy, and isolation felt safer than being exposed. But Jesus brought her story out into the open, not to condemn her, but to set her free.
Then came distraction. When Jesus got too personal, she tried to change the subject. Sound familiar? We’d rather talk about politics, religion, and other people’s sins. Anything but what God is trying to say to us. Jesus stayed focused. He knew her heart was the real issue.
Next came religion. She argued about where people should worship. It was her way of saying, “I have my beliefs. You have yours.” But Jesus wasn’t interested in empty systems or shallow traditions. He wanted worship in spirit and truth.
Finally, disconnection. “The Messiah will come one day,” she said. In other words, “Maybe later. Not now.” That’s when Jesus dropped the truth. “I who speak to you am he.” No more waiting. No more delay. No more pretending she didn’t need Him. He was here, in front of her, with living water in hand.
Whatever excuse you’ve been holding onto, Jesus sees through it. And He’s not mad. He’s patient. He’s personal. He’s present. The same One who met her at the well wants to meet you today. Are you still making excuses, or are you ready to drink?
