When the Crowd Walks Away

“After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. So Jesus said to the twelve, Do you want to go away as well? Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” – John 6:66-68

This moment in John 6 is one of the most sobering scenes in the Gospels. Jesus had just delivered a hard teaching. Not a feel-good message or a crowd-pleaser, but a challenging truth that left many confused, even offended. And instead of explaining it away or softening the blow, Jesus let them leave.

That’s when He turned to the twelve and asked a haunting question. “Do you want to go away as well?”

There’s no manipulation, no desperation in His voice. He simply gives them the same freedom He gave the crowd. And Peter’s answer is gold. “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”

When the path gets hard, the crowd gets thin. And that’s when your faith is really tested. Not when everything is working in your favor, but when you’re confused, disappointed, or unsure about what God is doing.

Faith isn’t the absence of questions. It’s the decision to stay when the questions come. It’s saying, “I don’t fully get it, but I know You’re the one I need.”

Too often, we’re tempted to leave when it gets hard. Maybe you’ve seen others fall away, or maybe you’re in a season where following Jesus doesn’t feel as exciting as it once did. That’s when you need to decide what Peter already knew. There’s nowhere else to go. There’s no one else who offers life like Jesus does.

What will you do when it gets difficult? Will you chase comfort, clarity, or convenience, or will you stay with the One who holds eternal life in His hands?
