Living While Dead

"And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked" – Ephesians 2:1-2

Just because someone is breathing doesn’t mean they’re alive. You can go to work, scroll your phone, make plans, and even show up at church, yet still be dead where it matters most. That’s what the Bible means when it talks about being spiritually dead. Not lifeless in body but empty in soul. Walking around, going through the motions, but disconnected from the source of life.

It’s a subtle kind of death. You might not even realize it’s happened. That is what makes it so dangerous. Revelation 3 speaks to this directly. Jesus says to the church in Sardis, “You have the reputation of being alive, but you are dead.” That should shake us. It means you can look the part. You can say the right words and still be missing the one thing that matters most, real life in Christ.

Sin does not always look like rebellion. Sometimes it looks like numbness. Like going quiet in your soul. Like settling for routines instead of relationship. That is what spiritual death feels like. Not always dramatic. Just dull. Just tired. Just stuck. But the good news is that Jesus never leaves the dead that way.

Ephesians 2 continues, “But God, being rich in mercy… made us alive together with Christ.” Jesus specializes in bringing dead things to life. He did not come just to make bad people better. He came to make dead people alive. That includes you. Whether you feel far off or just flat inside, He wants to wake you up.

You were not made to sleepwalk through life. You were created for fullness. For joy. For purpose. Don’t stay in a grave that Jesus already opened. Let Him breathe life into your spirit and call you out. Wake up. The grave clothes don’t fit you anymore.
