When Clean Isn’t What You Thought
“What God has made clean, do not call common.” – Acts 10:15
Most of us have a category for who we think belongs. We may not say it out loud, but it shows in how we act, who we invite, and how we think about people. Whether it’s because of their past, their appearance, their politics, or their struggles, we decide who feels “in” and who feels “out.” And if we’re not careful, church can start to look more like a closed circle than an open door.
That’s exactly what Peter was wrestling with when he had a vision that flipped everything upside down. God showed him a sheet full of animals considered unclean and told him to eat. Peter refused, thinking he was honoring God by staying pure. But God wasn’t talking about food. He was preparing Peter’s heart for the people he had written off. Cornelius, a Gentile, was about to be welcomed into the family of God. And Peter needed to learn what God had already decided. Clean wasn’t about tradition anymore. It was about Jesus.
This moment wasn’t just about Peter. It was about every person who ever wondered if they were too far gone, too different, or too messed up to be part of what God is doing. The message was clear. God is still breaking down the boxes we build. The ones labeled “unfit,” or “outsider,” or “not like us.” His grace doesn’t stop at the boundaries we draw. It reaches further than we think it should and pulls people in that we never expected.
If you’ve ever been the one overlooked, labeled, or shut out, you’re not forgotten. You’re not beyond grace. And if you’ve ever been the one holding the gate, it might be time to lay your label down and let God rewrite the categories. The Gospel was never meant to stay inside safe walls. It was meant to break through them.
Jesus didn’t come to approve your boxes. He came to blow them up. Let Him do that in you. And let Him do it through you. Because what He calls clean, you have no business calling common.
