When Jesus Comes to the Table
“Then one of the Pharisees invited him to eat with him. He entered the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table” - Luke 7:36
When studying Luke 7, you will see that the entire moment starts with a meal. A Pharisee invites Jesus to eat with him, and Jesus accepts. He shows up to the table knowing who invited Him. He knows the man’s heart. He knows the unspoken pride that fills the room. He knows what will be whispered when the woman walks in. And He still pulls up a seat.
That is the heart of Jesus. He will sit down with the religious and the rebellious. He will recline at a table surrounded by people who think they understand Him, knowing full well they do not. He will share space with people who question His identity, people who doubt His power, and people who judge everyone else while ignoring the condition of their own souls.
When the sinful woman shows up, everything gets uncomfortable. Her presence reveals something that had been hidden beneath the surface: Simon’s self-righteousness. He doesn't say it out loud, but Jesus hears his thoughts. And what does Jesus do? He turns the conversation around. He speaks directly to Simon. He draws the attention not to the woman’s past, but to Simon’s heart.
This is what happens when Jesus comes to the table. He does not just bless the meal. He begins to work on the people. He doesn’t just listen politely. He confronts gently but truthfully. He challenges assumptions, reveals blind spots, and invites everyone present into something deeper than religion. He brings transformation to the table.
When it comes to your table, where does Jesus fit? Is He just a guest, or does He have authority to point things out? Because when He sits down, He is not coming just for conversation. He is coming to change lives. Including yours.
