Hard Teachings Are Still True
“When many of his disciples heard it, they said, ‘This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?’” – John 6:60
Not long after Jesus fed more than five thousand people with just five loaves and two fish, the crowds followed Him across the sea, looking for more. They had seen a miracle with their own eyes. Their stomachs were full. Their curiosity was stirred. But Jesus didn’t give them another performance. Instead, He gave them a message. One that made many of them uncomfortable.
He told them, “Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you.” For us, looking back through the lens of the cross and the resurrection, we can understand this as a call to spiritual union with Christ. But for them, in that moment, it was shocking. Confusing. Offensive. It wasn’t what they wanted to hear. So they walked away.
Some truths are hard to hear. Jesus never promised that following Him would be easy or that every word He speaks would feel good right away. He doesn’t cater to our preferences. He speaks eternal truth, whether it’s comfortable or not. And the question that every follower has to wrestle with is, when His teachings challenge you, do you walk away, or do you stay and trust Him?
We live in a time when many want a customizable version of Christianity. A Jesus who affirms but never convicts. A faith that comforts but never confronts. But real discipleship means sticking around when the words get hard. Trusting when you don’t fully understand. Leaning in when your instincts say to pull back.
The crowd left. Jesus didn’t chase them. He turned to the twelve and asked, “Do you want to go away as well?” That question still hangs in the air for us. Will you follow even when the teaching is tough? Because that is often where real life begins.
