Stay in Your Lane and Follow Jesus

“Jesus said to him, ‘If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow me!’” – John 21:22

In John 21, we see that Peter had just been restored by Jesus after denying Him. He was given a mission and a calling. But before he even took a step forward, he looked at John and asked, “What about him?” It’s a moment that feels all too familiar. Jesus had just spoken directly to Peter’s heart, but comparison showed up before obedience did.

We do the same thing. God nudges us to step out, to trust Him, to obey in something specific. And before we take action, we glance to the side. What are they doing? Why is their life easier? Why do they get that platform, that opportunity, that recognition? It’s hard to stay focused when our eyes are always drifting to someone else’s lane.

Jesus didn’t entertain Peter’s question. He didn’t give an explanation or a breakdown of John’s journey. Instead, He gave a loving but firm answer: “What is that to you? You follow me.” In other words, your calling is not going to look like theirs, and that’s by design. You were made for your path, not theirs.

Comparison is a thief. It steals your peace, your purpose, and your joy. It takes your eyes off the One you're supposed to be following. Jesus didn’t ask you to understand everyone else’s journey. He asked you to follow Him with all your heart, no matter what the road looks like.

Wherever you are today, fix your eyes forward. Don’t let comparison derail your obedience. Your path is enough, and your calling is enough. Jesus is leading, and that is more than enough. Follow Him.
