The Gift of Today
"This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it." – Psalm 118:24
Psalm 118 was sung by God's people during their greatest celebrations, and Jesus Himself quoted from this very psalm in the days before the cross. The verse reminds us of a truth we easily overlook: today isn't an accident. The Lord has made this day. He crafted it with intention and purpose.
We often spend so much time looking backward at what we've lost or forward to what we hope to gain that we miss the gift sitting right in front of us: today. This moment. This breath. This opportunity to experience God's presence. The psalmist reminds us that today isn't just another square on the calendar. It's a deliberate gift from the Lord, designed for us to experience His goodness.
When we start each day with thanksgiving for the simple fact that we're alive to live it, everything else begins to come into focus. The people we'll encounter, the work we'll do, the challenges we'll face, they're all part of God's intentional design for this specific day in our lives.
Pay attention to the command tucked inside the verse: "let us rejoice and be glad in it." Rejoicing is not described here as something that happens to us when conditions are right. It is something we choose to do. The psalmist is not waiting for a perfect day to celebrate; he is deciding to be glad in the day God has already given. That is a quiet act of trust. It says, "Lord, I may not understand everything about today, but I trust that You made it, and that is enough reason to be glad.”
This changes how we handle the ordinary, unremarkable days, the ones that feel more like a grind than a gift. Most of life is not made of grand celebrations; it is made of Tuesdays. But the same God who made the mountaintop moments also made this regular day, with its commute, its chores, and its quiet routines. When you learn to thank God for today, the plain one in front of you, you discover that no day is truly ordinary. Each one is handcrafted by a Father who wanted you to have it.
Prayer
Father, thank You for the gift of today. Help me not to take for granted the miracle of being alive and able to experience Your love. Open my eyes to see the beauty and opportunity in ordinary moments. Let my life be a reflection of gratitude for the precious gift of time You've given me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
