Thankful for His Presence
"And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age." – Matthew 28:20
These are the final recorded words of Jesus in Matthew's Gospel. Right after commissioning His disciples to go into all the world, He leaves them with a promise that would carry them through every hardship ahead: "I am with you always." The disciples would soon face persecution, rejection, and even death, but they would never face it alone.
Jesus' promise to be with us always isn't conditional on our performance or dependent on our circumstances. It's not a promise for sunny days only or for seasons when our faith feels strong. It's an absolute guarantee that transcends every situation we'll ever face. This presence isn't just a nice theological concept; it's the foundation of our gratitude. When we truly grasp that the Creator of the universe chooses to walk through every moment of our lives with us, thanksgiving becomes our natural response.
Sometimes we get so focused on asking God for things that we forget to thank Him for the greatest gift He's already given us: Himself. His presence in our daily routines, our quiet moments, our celebrations, and our struggles is the treasure that makes every other blessing meaningful.
Notice the small word Jesus tucks in at the start: "behold." It is His way of saying, "Pay attention to this. Don't miss it." He knew His followers would be tempted to feel alone the moment things got hard, so He calls them to stop and take hold of this truth before they ever step into trouble. The same is true for us. On the days you feel forgotten or overwhelmed, His promise has not changed. He is still with you, even when your feelings tell you otherwise. Gratitude grows when we choose to believe what He said over what we feel.
Think about how this reshapes an ordinary day. You wake up and He is already there. You head into a hard conversation, and He goes with you. You lie awake at night with worries circling, and He has not left the room. We often save our awareness of God for church or crisis, but Jesus promised His presence for the whole of life, the commute, the kitchen sink, the waiting room, and the quiet evening. When you start noticing Him in the small, regular moments, thanksgiving stops being something you schedule and becomes the steady backdrop of your day.
Set aside time today to simply sit quietly and thank God for His presence in your life. Don't ask for anything or try to solve any problems. Just acknowledge that He is with you right now and express gratitude for that incredible reality.
Prayer
Jesus, thank You that I never have to face anything alone. Your presence is the constant in my ever-changing world. Help me to be more aware of You throughout my day, to talk with You in the ordinary moments, and to draw strength from knowing You are always right here with me. I'm grateful beyond words for Your faithful companionship. In Jesus' name, Amen.
