When the Cross Seems Questionable

“For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but it is the power of God to us who are being saved.” – 1 Corinthians 1:18

There is something about the cross that just doesn’t make sense to the world. Always has been. Always will be. Think about it. A sinless Savior dying for sinners who didn’t deserve it. A King giving up His crown to carry a cross. A God who could have crushed His enemies, choosing instead to forgive them. That kind of love is hard to comprehend.

The truth is, if you live like you believe that, people will question you, too. They’ll wonder why you’re willing to forgive someone who hurt you. They’ll shake their heads when you choose humility over revenge. They’ll think it’s foolish to sacrifice for the sake of someone else. And they’ll absolutely struggle to understand why you would build your life on the teachings of a crucified carpenter from Galilee.

But this is exactly what Paul was talking about. The cross doesn’t make sense to a world that is focused on power, pleasure, and pride. It looks weak. It seems backwards. It feels like foolishness. But to us who are being saved, it is the very power of God.

When your motives are questioned, when your methods are criticized, when your loyalty to Jesus is doubted, remember the cross. Remember that Jesus endured worse than skepticism. He endured the shame, the suffering, and the scorn for your sake.

And He did it out of love.

Don’t change course just because the world doesn’t get it. Stay faithful. Live boldly. Walk in grace and truth. And if the world finds it questionable, that’s okay. They questioned Him too. But what looked like foolishness to many was actually the greatest victory the world has ever seen.
