The Beauty of Broken Things
“He blessed and broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds.” – Matthew 14:19
Most of us love the idea of being a blessing. We want to be used by God, to make a difference in someone’s life, to offer something that matters. But the part we usually overlook is that our blessings often have to be broken before they can be multiplied. That truth shows up in one of the most well-known miracles in all of Scripture. The feeding of the five thousand.
A young boy brings his small lunch, just five loaves and two fish. It is not enough for a crowd this size, but it is enough for Jesus. He takes it, blesses it, and then He breaks it. That’s the part we skip past, but it matters. The blessing was not multiplied until it was broken. The miracle did not begin until what was offered was torn apart and given away piece by piece.
That is the part we hesitate to embrace. We want to bring what we have, but we also want to keep it whole. We want to hold onto our comfort, our plans, our control. We hope God will use what we offer, but we want Him to do it without disrupting our lives too much. The problem is, God does His most powerful work not just with what we offer, but with what we surrender.
Jesus is not in the business of preserving things for show. He is in the business of transforming things for impact. And more often than not, that means He will break what we bring. He will break our plans to build something better. He will break our expectations to increase our faith. He will break our rhythm to deepen our dependence. And though it may hurt in the moment, what comes from that breaking is always more than we could have imagined.
The blessing is not in what stays whole. The blessing is in what we’re willing to give away. If you want your life to make an eternal impact, let Him break what you bring. Let Him shape it into something greater than you could have made on your own. In His hands, the broken becomes beautiful, and what seems like loss always leads to more.
