Ordinary Obedience Has Eternal Impact
"As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, 'Follow me.' And he rose and followed him." - Matthew 9:9
It probably felt like just another normal day. Matthew was at work, doing what he always did. But Jesus walked by and spoke two simple words that would change everything. Follow me. No warning, no preparation, just a call. And Matthew obeyed.
That moment might not have seemed earth-shaking at the time. It was just one man leaving his booth and taking a step behind Jesus. But that small step led to a ripple effect that still impacts lives today. Matthew did not just follow Jesus; he became one of His closest disciples. He later wrote the Gospel that bears his name. And his legacy continues to preach good news all around the world.
All of that started with a simple yes.
Sometimes we wait for a huge moment or dramatic sign to feel like we are doing something meaningful for God. But Scripture reminds us again and again that God moves through the ordinary. Through fishermen and tax collectors. Through small obedience and quiet faithfulness. The kind no one else might notice.
That means your everyday yes matters. Saying no to temptation. Staying faithful in your work. Serving when it is inconvenient. Speaking up when it would be easier to stay quiet. None of that is wasted.
You never know who is watching your obedience. You never know how your faith might lead someone else to Jesus. What seems small to you may be the beginning of something eternal.
God specializes in turning simple yeses into world-changing stories. He did it with Matthew. He can do it with you, too.
