When Comfort Competes with Christ
"And Jesus said to him, 'Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.'" - Luke 9:58
Jesus never sugarcoated the cost of following Him. When a man approached Him, eager to join the journey, Jesus gave a warning instead of a welcome. He made it clear that the path would not come with guarantees of ease or comfort. If stability was the goal, this was not the route to take.
That may not sound inviting, but it is honest. Following Jesus often means stepping out of what feels safe. It may lead to decisions that the world does not understand. It might cost you comfort, predictability, or approval. But it will always lead to something greater.
Comfort is not the enemy, but it can become a competitor. When you let the pursuit of ease shape your choices more than obedience to Christ, you risk settling for less than what He is calling you to. Sometimes the biggest obstacle to your purpose is your desire to stay comfortable.
Jesus did not have a place to lay His head because His mission mattered more than His comfort. He was focused on eternal impact, not temporary relief. And He calls you to live with that same mindset. This does not mean you chase hardship. It means you chase Him, even when it leads through hard things.
If you follow Jesus only when it feels easy, you will eventually stop following when it doesn’t. But when He becomes the reason, the comfort you lose is replaced by the peace and purpose that only come from walking in step with Him.
Do not let comfort hold you back from what Christ is calling you to. His way is not always easy, but it is always worth it.
