Even When You’re Overqualified, Obey Anyway
"Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him." - John 13:5
Jesus had nothing to prove. He knew exactly who He was. Creator of the universe. Lord of glory. The One through whom all things were made. And yet, on the night He would be betrayed, He got down on the floor and washed feet.
That job belonged to servants. It was dirty, lowly, and not something a respected leader would do. But Jesus didn’t cling to status. He chose obedience. He chose humility. He chose to model what greatness actually looks like in the kingdom of God.
Somewhere along the way, we get tempted to believe that certain roles or responsibilities are beneath us. We assume we’ve graduated beyond menial service or that obedience should come with recognition. But the example of Jesus reminds us that obedience is not about climbing a ladder. It’s about stooping low enough to lift others up.
You might feel overqualified for what God is asking you to do. Maybe you’ve already done your time serving behind the scenes. Maybe your talents or resume could take you further. But here’s the thing, God isn’t impressed with credentials. He’s drawn to a willing heart.
Obedience often looks like doing what no one sees. It looks like showing up, saying yes, and staying faithful even when your title, background, or experience says you deserve more. Jesus wasn’t forced to serve. He chose to. And He asks us to do the same.
If Jesus could wash feet, then we can too. Don’t let pride convince you that obedience is optional. If the King of kings could stoop that low, then there’s nothing too small for you when it’s done for Him.
