Not Everyone Will Celebrate Your Change

"Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gerasenes asked him to depart from them, for they were seized with great fear. So he got into the boat and returned." - Luke 8:37

Change is powerful, but it can also be uncomfortable. In Luke 8, Jesus does something incredible. He restores a man who had been possessed and out of control. One moment, this man was a terror to the community, and the next, he was calm, clothed, and fully in his right mind. You’d think everyone would celebrate. But they didn’t.

Instead of praising God or welcoming Jesus, the crowd begged Him to leave. They couldn’t handle what had just happened. The transformation was too disruptive. It was easier for them to live with the broken man than to embrace the change Jesus brought. They were more comfortable with the chaos they knew than the freedom they didn’t understand.

That same dynamic still happens today. When God begins changing your life, healing things, rearranging priorities, making you new, some people will cheer you on. But others won’t know how to handle it. They might pull away. They might criticize or question. Not everyone is ready for the version of you that’s following Jesus.

That can hurt, especially when it’s people close to you. But you cannot let their discomfort determine your direction. Their reaction says more about where they are than where you’re going. You’re not called to make everyone comfortable. You’re called to follow Christ.

Keep walking forward. Keep growing. Keep obeying. Even when others don’t get it. Jesus didn’t argue with the crowd; He left. He had already done what He came to do. The miracle had already happened.

You don’t need universal approval to walk in freedom. You just need to keep your eyes on the One who changed you. Because His approval is what matters most.
