Mission Flows Out of Intimacy
"For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you." - John 13:15
Before Peter ever preached a sermon or performed a miracle, Jesus gave him one simple invitation: Follow Me. That call came long before Peter knew his purpose. Long before he took bold stands or made big mistakes. It started with a relationship. It always does.
Many of us want to jump straight into the mission. We want clarity, impact, purpose. We want to know what God wants us to do. But if we’re not careful, we’ll chase calling at the expense of closeness. We’ll get busy working for God while missing the joy of simply being with Him.
Jesus didn’t just hand Peter a task list. He walked with him. He shared meals, taught lessons, gave correction, and extended grace. Their relationship was the foundation for everything that came later. And that hasn’t changed. God still wants your heart before He wants your hands.
You might feel stuck because you don’t know the next step. Or maybe you’re exhausted because you’ve been doing a lot without really abiding. But your mission doesn’t begin with more effort. It begins with intimacy. Time with Jesus is what fuels everything else.
When you draw near to Him, your purpose gets clearer. When you sit at His feet, your direction finds shape. The assignment will come, but it flows from the relationship. Never flip that order.
Before you try to figure out your role in the Kingdom, spend time with the King. When your mission flows out of intimacy, your steps are no longer rushed or confused. They are steady, secure, and full of joy. God wants to walk with you first. Everything else comes after.
