Paying Attention To What God Is Revealing Before Storms Arrive
"The prudent sees danger and hides himself, but the simple go on and suffer for it.” - Proverbs 22:3
We live in a culture that rewards reaction. We've become skilled at crisis response and far less practiced at quiet, unhurried attention to what God may already be trying to show us in the calmer moments before crisis comes. But the wisdom literature of Scripture tells a different story. The prudent person in Proverbs isn't blessed because they never face danger — they're blessed because they pay attention. They see what others overlook. And seeing early, they can respond wisely rather than scrambling in panic when the storm is already overhead.
Discernment is not the same as anxiety. It's worth making that distinction clearly, because fear can masquerade as spiritual awareness. Anxiety scans the horizon compulsively, looking for threats, bracing for catastrophe, reading danger into every shadow. Discernment is different — it is rooted in peace, not dread. It comes from a soul that has spent enough time in God's presence to recognize His voice, and enough time in His Word to know the patterns of His warning and invitation. Jesus modeled this throughout His ministry. He regularly withdrew to pray before significant moments — before choosing the twelve disciples, before the cross, before confrontation. He wasn't reactive. He was attentive, anchored, and deeply oriented toward what the Father was revealing. That attentiveness shaped everything He did and how He faced every storm that came.
What does this look like practically in your life? It often begins with slowing down enough to notice. God speaks into the ordinary — through a verse that won't leave you alone, a pattern in your circumstances that keeps repeating, a prompting in prayer that keeps surfacing, a wise person in your life saying the same thing in multiple conversations. These are not coincidences. They are the shepherd's voice, calling ahead of the path, alerting you to what lies around the bend. The person who has cultivated a listening life doesn't eliminate hard seasons — but they often enter them with resources already in hand rather than scrambling to build them under pressure. Wisdom, James tells us, is available to anyone who asks for it generously and without reproach (James 1:5). That is an open invitation. And it is one worth accepting today, before the storm gathers, while the sky is still clear enough to hear.
Prayer
Lord, I don't want to be caught completely off guard by what's ahead — not because I'm afraid of it, but because I want to walk into whatever comes with my hands open, my roots deep, and my eyes already oriented toward You. You are a faithful guide. You warn the ones who are listening. Help me to be a person who listens. Amen.
