Trusting God When The Goal Remains Out Of Sight
"Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” - Hebrews 11:1
There is a particular kind of endurance that asks more of us than almost anything else: keeping going when there is nothing yet to show for it. Not the endurance of someone who can see the summit and knows the climb is nearly over — but the endurance of someone deep in the wilderness, surrounded by the same terrain they've been walking through for weeks, with no visible marker that the destination is any closer than it was when they started.
Hebrews 11 was written for exactly this kind of moment. The entire chapter is a roll call of people who kept walking toward something they never fully received in their lifetime. Abraham left for a city "whose designer and builder is God" — and never arrived (Hebrews 11:10). He lived in tents for the rest of his days, a stranger in the land he'd been promised. Moses chose the difficult road of faithfulness over the comfortable path of Egyptian security, "as seeing him who is invisible" (Hebrews 11:27). And the chapter ends with a sobering and beautiful admission: these men and women "did not receive what was promised" during their lives — yet they died in faith, greeting it from a distance, still convinced the goal was real (Hebrews 11:13). Their endurance was not sustained by visible results. It was sustained by the character and promises of the God they knew. That is a different kind of fuel entirely — and it burns far longer than external confirmation ever could.
The fear that rises when results remain invisible is almost always a fear about significance — Does what I'm doing actually matter? Is this faithfulness going anywhere, or am I pouring myself into something that isn't producing anything? And the answer God gives is not a progress report. It is a reminder of who He is. Galatians 6:9 makes a promise without an asterisk: "In due season we will reap, if we do not give up." Due season — His season, not the one we've decided is reasonable. The goal you cannot yet see is not evidence that the path is wrong. It may simply be evidence that the harvest isn't ready.
What sustains this kind of unseeing faith is not willpower — it is rootedness. Every chapter of Hebrews 11 returns to the same underlying logic: these people acted on what they knew about God rather than what they could see about their circumstances. That kind of walking is available to you today. The goal may still be out of sight, but the God who called you to the path is just as present on the unmeasured stretches as He is at the visible milestones. Keep walking.
Prayer
Give me the faith of the people in Hebrews 11 — the kind that acts on what it knows about You rather than what it can see about the circumstances. Remind me that Your promises don't expire when my patience does, that due season is still coming, and that not one seed of faithful obedience sown in Your name has ever been wasted. I don't need to see the whole harvest today. I just need enough light for the next step. Amen.
