Taking Something Off
"He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist." - John 13:4
Serving God often begins with subtracting something else. Before Jesus picked up a towel, He laid something down. The outer garment represented comfort, position, and status. Leaving it behind was intentional. Love could not move freely until something was removed. That moment reveals a simple truth. What you cling to can quietly limit how well you serve.
Most obstacles to service are not obvious sins. They are attachments. Pride that wants recognition. Comfort that resists inconvenience. Excess that fills hands meant to help others. None of these things seem harmful at first. Over time, they crowd out availability. Service slows when hands stay full, and hearts stay guarded.
Letting go is rarely dramatic. It happens in choices that feel small. Choosing humility instead of being noticed. Choosing generosity instead of accumulation. Choosing presence instead of protection. Service requires freedom of movement, and freedom comes when unnecessary weight is released. God never asked His people to serve while holding onto everything they value most.
Consider what might be getting in the way right now. Notice where reluctance rises. Pay attention to what you protect first when obedience calls. Those reactions often point to what needs to be set aside. Removing hindrances does not mean losing yourself. It means making room for love to flow through you more fully.
Jesus showed that taking something off leads to transformation. The disciples were changed because He was willing to lay aside what others would have guarded. That same invitation stands before you. Service grows stronger when pride loosens its grip and comfort stops setting the limits. God shapes willing hearts by clearing what holds them back.
Look honestly at what you are holding. Ask what might need to be laid down. You do not need to carry everything to be faithful. Sometimes obedience begins by taking something off so love can move unhindered.

Let us pray that I receive grace to release what Jesus needs me to let go of. Amen. In Jesus name.
