God Finds Us When We Run
“The angel of the Lord found her by a spring in the wilderness, the spring on the way to Shur.” – Genesis 16:7
Running can feel like relief at first. Distance feels like safety. Silence feels like control. When pain gets heavy, the instinct is to move away from it, from people, from conversations, sometimes even from God. We tell ourselves we just need space, time, or a fresh start. But underneath the movement is often a hope that if we get far enough away, the hurt will stop following us.
Most of us have run in quieter ways than packing a bag. We check out emotionally. We stop answering texts. We bury ourselves in work, distraction, or habits that numb the ache. We avoid places that remind us of what broke. Running feels proactive, but it often leaves us more exhausted than healed. The scenery changes, but the pain comes along for the ride.
Hagar ran because staying hurt too much. She was mistreated, powerless, and overwhelmed. The wilderness was not part of her plan, but it became her escape. What is easy to miss is that Scripture does not say God waited for her to come back. It says God found her. In the middle of nowhere. On a road going the wrong direction. God met her there. Running did not make her invisible.
That matters because many of us assume distance disqualifies us. We think if we step away long enough, God will stop looking. Hagar’s story says the opposite. God knows how to find people who are tired, scared, and moving away from everything familiar. He meets them in dry places, quiet places, and lonely places. Not to shame them for running, but to remind them they are not alone.
If you are running right now, hear this clearly. God has not lost sight of you. Your movement does not confuse Him. Your detour does not cancel His care. Even if you ran because you were hurt, angry, or overwhelmed, God still knows exactly where you are. The wilderness is not beyond His reach. Sometimes it is the very place where He steps in and reminds you that you were never as alone as you felt.
