Doing the Right Thing Does Not Guarantee Easy Outcomes
“How could I do this immense evil, and how could I sin against God?” – Genesis 39:9
There is a quiet assumption many of us carry, even if we would never say it out loud. If I obey God, things should get easier. Maybe not perfect, but at least smoother. We expect integrity to protect us, faithfulness to shield us, and good choices to produce good results quickly. When that does not happen, confusion sets in. It feels unfair. It feels discouraging. It can even feel like obedience was a mistake.
Joseph did the right thing when no one would have blamed him for doing otherwise. He resisted temptation. He honored God. He protected someone else’s trust. And the result was not reward but punishment. Lies were believed. His character was ignored. He lost freedom for doing what was right. That moment exposes a hard truth most of us learn slowly. Obedience is not a bargaining chip. It is an act of trust.
The pain of that reality is real. Doing the right thing and still suffering consequences can shake your resolve. It makes you question whether integrity is worth it when shortcuts seem to pay off for others. But Scripture does not present obedience as a strategy for comfort. It presents it as alignment with God, even when the cost is high. Joseph’s obedience did not rescue him from prison, but it did preserve his soul.
This matters because many people quietly compromise when obedience feels costly. They do not want to suffer for doing right. They want results. They want relief. When obedience does not deliver those things quickly, disappointment creeps in. But the long view tells a different story. God does not always spare us from hardship, but He never wastes faithful obedience. What looks like loss now may be preparation you cannot yet see.
Easy outcomes are not the measure of a faithful life. Trust is. Obedience does not guarantee comfort, but it does keep you close to God. Joseph lost his freedom for a season, but he did not lose God’s presence. Sometimes doing the right thing costs more than we expected. Even then, it is never the wrong choice. God sees what obedience costs, and He honors faithfulness in ways that go far beyond immediate relief.
