When Waiting Turns into Wounding

“Then Judah said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, Remain a widow in your father’s house until my son Shelah grows up. For he thought, He might die too like his brothers. So Tamar went to live in her father’s house.” – Genesis 38:11
 
Waiting is usually presented as a virtue. We are told to be patient, to trust the process, to hold on a little longer. But there is a kind of waiting that slowly turns painful. It is the waiting that has no clear end, no honest explanation, and no movement. What begins as obedience can quietly become wounding when promises are delayed long enough to feel forgotten.
 
That kind of waiting is heavy because it keeps hope on a leash. You are not free to move forward, but you are not being cared for either. Life feels paused while everyone else keeps going. Tamar was told to wait, not because it was best for her, but because it was convenient for someone else. What sounded reasonable at first slowly became neglect. The waiting was not neutral. It cost her years, security, and dignity.
 
Delayed promises have a way of doing that to us. At first, we give the benefit of the doubt. We assume timing will work itself out. We tell ourselves to stay faithful. Over time, the delay starts to speak. It whispers that maybe you were not important enough to remember. Maybe the promise was never real. Maybe your pain is simply acceptable to the people in power. That kind of waiting does not just test patience; it wounds the heart.
 
God does not ignore that pain. Scripture never treats Tamar’s waiting as harmless. God sees the damage done by silence and delay. He does not excuse Judah’s fear or justify his inaction. Mercy does not call neglect faith. Mercy calls it what it is and then begins to work toward redemption. God was not absent while Tamar waited, even though it felt that way. He was watching, remembering, and preparing a response.
 
If you are in a season where waiting has started to hurt, you are not weak for feeling that pain. Waiting becomes wounding when promises are withheld, and hope is stretched thin. God sees the weight you are carrying. He is not asking you to pretend it does not hurt. He is near to the ones who have waited longer than they should have had to. What feels forgotten by people is still fully seen by God, and His mercy does not overlook wounds caused by delay.
