Facing What We Wanted to Escape
“The angel of the Lord said to her, Go back to your mistress and submit to her authority. The angel of the Lord also said to her, I will greatly multiply your offspring, and they will be too many to count.” – Genesis 16:9-10
Sometimes the last thing we want to hear from God is go back. We ran for a reason. We left because it hurt, because it was heavy, because staying felt impossible. So when God points back toward the very place we escaped, it feels confusing at best and cruel at worst. Everything in us wants forward, not backward.
Running feels decisive. Returning feels weak. Yet Scripture shows moments where God does not lead people away from difficulty but back into it with something new. Not with denial. Not with blindness. With presence and promise. Hagar did not imagine God would meet her in the wilderness only to send her back. That instruction cut against every instinct she had. But notice what came with it. She was not sent back empty. She carried a promise she did not have before.
This is where we tend to misunderstand God. We assume returning means reliving the pain exactly as it was. God does not send people back unchanged. He sends them back strengthened, seen, and assured. Facing a hard place again is different when you know God has spoken, God has promised, and God will be present. The location may be the same. The posture is not.
There are situations we avoid because they remind us of wounds, failures, or unresolved tension. Conversations we never finished. Responsibilities we abandoned. Places we associate with pain. God does not call us back to punish us. He calls us back to redeem what was left unfinished. Avoidance delays healing. Facing it with God opens the door to transformation.
Returning does not mean pretending the hurt was not real. It means trusting that God is more real than the hurt. Sometimes obedience looks like courage instead of comfort. God does not always remove the hard place. He often fills it with His presence and redefines it with His promise. What once broke you may become the place where God proves He is faithful, even there.
