When Fear Magnifies The Obstacle
"The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” - Psalm 27:1
Fear has a strange talent. It takes whatever is standing in front of you and makes it bigger. And the cruel thing about this distortion is that it feels accurate. When fear enlarges the obstacle, you don't experience it as exaggeration — you experience it as truth.
This is exactly what happened to the Israelites at the edge of the Promised Land. Ten of the twelve spies came back from scouting the land and described the people there as giants. "We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and so we seemed to them" (Numbers 13:33). Notice the order of that confession. First they shrank in their own estimation, and only then did they assume they looked small to everyone else. The obstacle hadn't actually changed size. Their perception had. Fear had done its magnifying work, and a land God had promised to give them suddenly looked like a place that would swallow them whole.
But two men saw the same giants and reached the opposite conclusion. Caleb and Joshua looked at the very same obstacle and said, in effect, the size of the challenge is not the point — the size of our God is. They weren't denying the giants were real. They were refusing to let the giants be the biggest thing in the picture. That is the quiet, powerful difference faith makes. Faith doesn't pretend the mountain isn't there. It simply measures the mountain against the One who made it. And measured that way, even the most impossible-looking obstacle shrinks back to its actual size. God's strength doesn't just help you climb the mountain — it reshapes what the mountain even is.
Here is what's worth holding onto today: the obstacle in front of you is being measured by fear, and fear is not a reliable scale. You are likely looking at something that feels far bigger than it actually is, because anxiety has been quietly enlarging it in your mind for days, maybe longer. The invitation is not to talk yourself into false confidence or to minimize a genuine difficulty. It's to bring the obstacle alongside God and let Him be the measure. The same God who is your light in the dark and your stronghold in the storm is the One who stands between you and the thing you're dreading. Whom, then, shall you fear? When God is the largest reality in the frame, the obstacle finds its true proportions — and they were never as impossible as fear insisted.
Prayer
Father, today I choose the Caleb perspective. I choose to bring this obstacle alongside You and let You be the measure of it. You are my light when I can't see a way through, and my stronghold when the challenge feels overwhelming. Reshape what looks impossible to me. Help me take the next step trusting Your strength rather than calculating my own. Whom shall I fear? Nothing in front of me is bigger than the One who stands beside me. Amen.
