When The Next Step Feels Risky
"Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” - Joshua 1:9
There is a kind of fear that doesn't show up at the edge of disaster. It shows up at the edge of obedience. You sense God nudging you toward something — a conversation, a decision, a step of faith you can't quite see the end of — and everything in you wants to wait. Wait until you feel more confident. Wait until the risk feels smaller. Wait until you're finally, fully ready. And so you stand at the edge of the next step, telling yourself that hesitation is wisdom, when often it's just fear wearing a respectable disguise.
The trouble is, the readiness you're waiting for rarely arrives in advance.
Look closely at the moment Israel stood before the Jordan River. God told them to cross — but the river was at flood stage, swollen and dangerous, and the way forward was anything but safe (Joshua 3:15). The instruction was striking: the priests carrying the ark were to step into the water first, and only then would the river part (Joshua 3:13). Not a step after the waters receded. A step into the risk, before there was any visible reason to believe it would hold. The miracle waited on the obedience. The ground only became solid once their feet were already wet. That is so often how God works. He doesn't hand us certainty and then ask us to move. He asks us to move, and meets us in the moving.
This reorders how we usually think about courage. We tend to believe that courage is a feeling we wait to receive — that one day the fear will lift and we'll finally feel brave enough to act. But courage isn't the absence of fear; it's faith deciding to take the step while the fear is still present. Notice that God told Joshua to be strong and courageous because He would be present — not because the path was risk-free. The promise was never that the next step would feel safe. The promise was that God would be with him in it. Wherever you go, He said. Not wherever it's comfortable. Not wherever the outcome is guaranteed. Wherever you go. The presence of God is what makes the risky step survivable — and it travels with you into the very thing you're afraid to begin.
So if you're standing at the edge of a step that feels too risky, hear this gently today: you may never feel fully ready, and that's okay. Readiness is not the requirement — trust is. The God who calls you forward is already standing in the place He's calling you to. He is not waiting at a safe distance to see whether you make it. He goes ahead, He stays beside, and He holds what you cannot yet see. The river may still be at flood stage. The outcome may still be unclear. But the step of faith was never meant to be taken on the strength of your confidence. It was meant to be taken on the strength of His presence. Put your foot in the water. The ground will be there.
Prayer
Father, Steady my heart, strengthen my feet, and remind me that courage isn't the absence of fear — it's trusting You enough to step forward anyway. I'm moving, Lord. Meet me in it. Amen.
