When You've Done All You Can
"Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” - 1 Peter 5:7
There is a particular exhaustion that comes after you've given everything you have to a situation. You prayed. You prepared. You worked, you waited, you did the hard and faithful things. And now you've reached the edge of what's yours to do — the place where the outcome no longer depends on your effort. You'd think that edge would bring relief. Instead, it often brings a fresh wave of fear. Because once your part is done, the only thing left to carry is the result, and the result is the one thing you were never able to control.
That's where so many of us get stuck. We finish our work, but we can't put down the worry. We keep rehearsing outcomes, replaying every variable, mentally gripping a situation that has already left our hands. And fear convinces us that this anxious vigilance is somehow holding things together — that if we just keep carrying the weight, we're keeping the worst from happening.
But there's a quiet command in Peter's letter that interrupts that exhausting cycle. Cast all your anxiety on him. The word "cast" is forceful — it's the picture of throwing something off your shoulders entirely, not setting it down gently so you can pick it back up later. And it comes attached to a reason that changes everything: because he cares for you. You are not releasing the outcome into a void. You are handing it to a God who is more invested in your good than you are, more attentive to the details than you could ever be, and fully able to do what you cannot. The rest was never yours to carry. It was always His.
Think of the woman who anointed Jesus, or the boy who handed over five loaves and two fish. They each gave what they had — and then they let go. The boy didn't tell Jesus how to multiply the bread. He simply offered it and trusted what the Lord would do with it. That's the posture faith invites you into today. You've done your part. You've planted, watered, labored, and prayed. Now comes the harder, holier work of open hands — refusing to let fear talk you into clutching what you were meant to release. Trusting God with the outcome isn't passivity. It's the deliberate, courageous act of believing that the Shepherd who walked you this far is more than capable of finishing what only He can finish.
So if you're standing at the edge of all you can do, hear this gently: you can stop carrying the part that was never yours. The outcome is safe in hands far steadier than your own. Do your work faithfully, and then rest — not because you stopped caring, but because you've entrusted what you care about to the One who cares even more. He has never dropped anything you've placed in His keeping. He won't start now.
Prayer
Forgive me for clutching what was always Yours to carry. Help me rest — not in apathy, but in trust — knowing that what I've placed in Your keeping is safer there than it ever was with me. You have never dropped anything I've entrusted to You. I'm leaving this with You for good. Amen.
