Faithfulness When Forward Movement Feels Small
"And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” - Galatians 6:9
There is a kind of discouragement that doesn't come from failure — it comes from slowness. You're still showing up, still praying, still doing the right things. But the progress is so gradual, so imperceptible from where you're standing, that the effort starts to feel pointless. The mountain isn't getting smaller. The harvest isn't coming. And a quiet fear begins to take root: What if all of this faithfulness isn't actually leading anywhere?
A wilderness path doesn't always reward the traveler with visible milestones. Some stretches look identical to the ones you covered yesterday and the day before — the same terrain, the same trees, the same sky. And yet, you are further along than you were. The progress is real even when it isn't dramatic. This is what Paul understood when he wrote to the Galatian churches. He wasn't writing to people who had given up — he was writing to people who were about to. His counsel wasn't to try harder or push faster. It was simply: don't stop.
Scripture is remarkably honest about how long faithfulness sometimes takes. Joseph spent years in a pit and a prison before the promise came to pass. The Israelites circled the wilderness for four decades. The farmer who plants a field in spring doesn't dig up the seeds in May to check on them — he trusts the process he cannot see and keeps tending what he's been given. That kind of patient, unglamorous faithfulness is not a lesser form of faith. It may, in fact, be the most demanding form. It requires trusting God's timing over your own instincts, believing in fruit you can't yet hold, and choosing to keep moving on a path that isn't giving you the feedback you were hoping for. It's the kind of faith that looks ordinary from the outside and feels like everything on the inside.
The fear that slow progress stirs up is usually a fear about significance — Does any of this actually matter? Am I actually making a difference? And the answer that God gives is not a spreadsheet of your measurable results. It's a reminder of His character. He is not a God who wastes faithfulness. Not a single prayer offered in a quiet room, not a single act of obedience that cost you something, not a single day of showing up when you didn't feel like it — none of it is invisible to Him or wasted in His economy. The harvest is coming. The road is going somewhere. You are further along than the slow progress makes it feel. Keep walking.
Prayer
Give me the endurance to keep showing up — in prayer, in obedience, in love — even when the road feels long and the fruit feels far away. I don't want to give up one season short of the harvest You have prepared. So strengthen my hands, steady my feet, and keep me walking. The road is going somewhere because You are leading it. That is enough. Amen.
