The Gratitude of Grace
"But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved." – Ephesians 2:4–5
Notice the two most important words in this passage: "But God." Paul has just finished describing humanity's hopeless condition, dead in sin, following the ways of the world, with no ability to rescue ourselves. Then everything changes with those two words. "But God, being rich in mercy," stepped in where we could not.
That's the heart of grace. We don't earn our way out of spiritual death. We don't save ourselves through skill or good intentions. When we were dead in our sins, completely unable to help ourselves, God acted on our behalf. His love, His mercy, His grace became our rescue. The salvation we enjoy today isn't something we achieved; it's something we received.
This understanding should fill our hearts with gratitude every single day. Not just on Sundays or during prayer time, but in the middle of ordinary Tuesday afternoons. We are alive in Christ not because we deserved it, but because God's love is greater than our failure. That's worth celebrating.
Look at the reason Paul gives for why God acted. He says it was "because of the great love with which he loved us." God did not rescue us reluctantly or out of obligation. He moved toward us because He loved us, and He loved us while we were still dead in our sin, before we ever cleaned ourselves up or got our act together. That truth has a way of settling the restless heart. So many of us live as if God's love hinges on our performance, as if a bad week pushes Him away and a good one draws Him close. But Paul roots God's love in God's own character, not in our behavior. He loved you at your worst. He loves you still.
That changes how you carry yourself through an ordinary day. When you fail and feel like a disappointment, grace reminds you that you were never saved by your record in the first place. When you succeed and feel proud, grace reminds you that even your best comes from a God who reached you when you had nothing to offer. Either way, the pressure lifts. You stop trying to earn what has already been freely given. Living in the reality of "But God" means you can face your shortcomings honestly, knowing that the same mercy that first made you alive is the mercy that holds you today. And a heart that truly grasps that cannot help but overflow with thanks.
Spend time today reflecting on your life before Christ and your life now. Write a prayer of thanksgiving specifically for God's grace in saving you. Share this gratitude with someone else, either by telling your story or by encouraging them with the good news of God's grace.
Prayer
Father, I am overwhelmed by Your grace. Thank You for loving me when I was unlovable, for saving me when I couldn't save myself, and for making me alive in Christ. Help me never to take this gift for granted. Let my life be a constant expression of gratitude for the incredible grace You've shown me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
