We Will Never Serve Those We Never See

"When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd." - Matthew 9:36

Service does not begin with activity. It begins with awareness. Jesus did not look at people as interruptions or tasks to complete. He saw them. Before He healed, taught, or fed anyone, compassion rose because He noticed their condition. When people become invisible, service disappears. When people are truly seen, love has a place to start.

It is easy to stay busy and still miss people. Schedules fill quickly. Responsibilities stack up. Needs get reduced to projects, numbers, or problems to solve. In that kind of rhythm, hearts harden without realizing it. Blindness sets in quietly. The mission of God always slows us down enough to notice faces, stories, and pain. Without that awareness, even good intentions fall short.

Jesus consistently saw what others overlooked. He noticed the overlooked woman, the outcast, the grieving parent, the quiet follower standing on the edge of the crowd. Compassion shaped His movement. Service followed His sight. When awareness fades, service becomes mechanical. When sight is restored, love becomes personal.

Think about the people God has placed around you. Some need encouragement. Others need patience. A few may need help that feels inconvenient. Seeing them requires intention. It means lifting your eyes from your own concerns and paying attention to what God is already doing in someone else’s life. That awareness changes how you respond.

Neglect of God’s mission often starts with neglect of people. When hearts grow numb, service becomes optional. When compassion awakens, obedience follows naturally. Ask God to sharpen your vision again. Invite Him to help you see people the way He does. Service flows most freely when awareness leads the way. You cannot serve those you refuse to see.
