Picking Up the Right Tools
"Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him." - John 13:5
Service does not begin with good intentions alone. Jesus stood up, laid something down, and then picked up exactly what was needed for the moment. A basin. Water. A towel. Nothing impressive. Nothing attention-grabbing. Yet those simple tools became instruments of love because they were used with humility and purpose. Effective service has always depended on being equipped for the task at hand.
Jesus did not rush into action unprepared. He knew what the moment required and chose accordingly. The same principle applies to spiritual life. Passion without preparation often leads to frustration. Desire without readiness can leave good intentions unfinished. God equips His people so they can serve well, not just eagerly. The right tools matter because they allow love to move with wisdom and care.
Spiritual preparation shapes how you serve. Time in Scripture sharpens discernment. Prayer aligns your heart with God’s will. Community provides correction and encouragement. These are not optional extras. They are tools God uses to form you before He uses you. Service lasts longer when it flows from a prepared heart rather than raw effort.
Think about moments when serving felt heavy or confusing. Often, the issue was not willingness but readiness. Trying to serve without spiritual grounding drains joy quickly. God never intended obedience to depend on personal strength alone. He supplies what you need before asking you to pour yourself out.
