The Illusion of Control Through Hiding

“Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden.” – Genesis 3:8
 
Hiding often feels like control. When something goes wrong, when we feel exposed or afraid, pulling back seems wise. We manage what people see. We limit what God can touch. We convince ourselves that distance will keep things from getting worse. Hiding feels protective, like building a wall around pain. But walls do not just keep things out; they keep us in.
 
What hiding really does is create space between us and the very presence we need. It replaces connection with isolation and clarity with fear. The more we hide, the louder our thoughts get. Shame grows in silence. Fear multiplies when it is left alone. What started as self-protection slowly becomes self-imprisonment. We think we are safer in the trees, but we are actually more alone.
 
The illusion is believing that hiding gives us control. In reality, it gives fear more power. We stop being honest in prayer. We stop showing up fully in relationships. We manage appearances instead of healing wounds. God does not become distant when we hide, but we do. The distance is real, even if it is self-created.
 
God’s response to hiding is not anger. It is pursuit. He does not shout from a distance or wait for us to figure it out. He steps closer. He moves through the garden. He calls out. Not because He does not know where we are, but because He wants us to step back into relationship. Hiding never fooled God. It only kept Adam and Eve from the safety of being known.
 
Do you find yourself currently hiding? Maybe emotionally, spiritually, or relationally. It might be time to pause and be honest about what it is costing you. Control gained through hiding is temporary and fragile. It always increases fear and shrinks freedom. God is not asking you to expose yourself to shame. He is inviting you into healing. Step out of the trees. What feels risky may actually be the safest place you can be, fully seen and fully loved by God.
