The Pain of Feeling Invisible
“So she named the Lord who spoke to her: You Are El roi, for she said, In this place, have I actually seen the one who sees me?” – Genesis 16:13
There is a quiet kind of pain that comes from feeling invisible. It happens when you are present but overlooked, faithful but unnoticed, hurting but ignored. You can be surrounded by people and still feel unseen. Over time, that kind of pain convinces you that your story does not matter and your presence does not make a difference. It is not loud suffering, but it is heavy suffering.
Hagar knew that pain well. She was a servant, a foreigner, and a woman with no power. She was pulled into a situation she did not choose and was blamed for outcomes she could not control. When the tension became unbearable, she ran into the wilderness alone. In that place, she had every reason to believe she did not matter. No one was looking for her. No one was advocating for her. No one seemed to care.
But God did. God met her in the wilderness and spoke directly to her. He did not treat her as background noise or collateral damage. He called her by name and acknowledged her pain. That moment changed everything. Hagar responded by naming God. She called Him the God who sees. Not the God who fixes everything instantly. Not the God who explains every detail. The God who sees. That was enough to restore her dignity and remind her that her life mattered.
Feeling seen does not mean life suddenly becomes easy. Hagar still had a difficult road ahead. But now she knew she was not invisible. God had seen her in the middle of her pain, and that truth gave her strength to keep going. Being seen by God does not erase hardship, but it anchors you in the middle of it.
