When Fear Follows You Out the Door
“The angel of the Lord said to her, I will greatly multiply your offspring, and they will be too many to count.” – Genesis 16:10
Leaving a messy situation feels like relief at first. The door closes. The noise fades. The pressure eases. But fear has a way of following close behind. It shows up in the quiet moments when you realize distance did not solve everything. The problem may be behind you, but the anxiety is still very much alive. Fear does not need permission to travel.
Many people are surprised by that. We assume leaving will bring peace. Sometimes it does not. Fear lingers because the unknown feels just as heavy as the pain we escaped. Questions rush in. What now? What about tomorrow? What happens next? The heart does not calm simply because the environment changed. Fear often grows louder when certainty disappears.
God does something powerful in moments like that. He does not ignore fear or scold it. He speaks into it. In Genesis 16, God does not pretend Hagar’s situation is easy. Instead, He gives her a promise big enough to interrupt the fear that is pressing in. Fear says you are alone and exposed. God answers with assurance and future. His words do not erase the hardship, but they reframe it.
Promises have a way of doing that. Fear narrows vision until all you can see is what might go wrong. God widens vision until you can see beyond the moment you are stuck in. Fear speaks in what ifs. God speaks in what will be. His voice does not always remove the situation, but it steadies the heart inside it.
Fear may still be present after you leave, but it does not get the final word. God knows how to meet people on the road, not just at the destination. He speaks directly into anxious hearts and reminds them that the future is not empty. Leaving did not end your story.
