Gratitude for Growth
"And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ." – Philippians 1:6
Paul wrote this letter to a church he deeply loved, and his confidence in their future wasn't based on their track record. It was based on God's faithfulness. The same God who started a work of grace in their hearts would be the One to finish it. Spiritual growth, Paul reminds us, is God's project from beginning to end.
God is constantly working in us, shaping us, teaching us, and developing our character. Sometimes this growth happens through blessings that expand our capacity for joy. Other times it comes through challenges that stretch our faith and deepen our dependence on Him. Both kinds of experiences deserve our gratitude because both are evidence that God hasn't given up on us.
Paul's confidence in the Philippians wasn't based on their perfection but on God's faithfulness to complete what He starts. When we look at our lives and see areas where we still need work, we can be grateful that God's project in us isn't finished. He's still actively involved in making us more like Jesus, and that process itself is a gift worth celebrating.
Look closely at the words Paul chooses: "began" and "bring it to completion." He pictures God as a craftsman who does not abandon His work halfway. We would never expect a builder to lay a foundation and then walk off the job, leaving the house exposed to the weather. Yet that is often how we imagine God treating us. We assume that our slow progress or our repeated stumbles might finally wear out His patience. Paul says the opposite. The God who started the work is committed to seeing it through, and His commitment does not waver on the days we feel like we are barely moving forward.
That truth changes how we handle the ordinary, frustrating moments of growth. When you lose your temper again, when an old habit resurfaces, when you wonder if you will ever change, you can return to this promise instead of giving up. God is not surprised by the unfinished places in you, and He has not lost interest in them. The same hand that began the work is still at it today, in the quiet decisions, the small obediences, and even the failures He uses to teach you. Gratitude for growth means thanking God not only for how far He has brought you, but for His steady refusal to leave the job undone.
Think about one area where you've grown spiritually in the past year. Thank God specifically for that growth and for His patience with you in the process. Then identify one area where you'd like to grow more and ask Him to continue His work in that part of your life.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for not leaving me the way You found me. I'm grateful for every way You've grown me and shaped me, even through the difficult lessons. Help me to embrace the process of becoming more like Jesus, trusting that You will complete the good work You've started in me. Give me patience with myself and excitement about who You're making me to become. In Jesus' name, Amen.
