Pitching Your Tent Too Close
"So Lot chose for himself all the Jordan Valley… and he pitched his tents as far as Sodom." - Genesis 13:11–12
Most people do not plan to end up somewhere unhealthy. They just get close enough to feel comfortable. The distance shrinks slowly. What once felt risky starts to feel familiar. Pitching a tent near danger often feels harmless at first because nothing bad happens right away. Scripture shows how subtle proximity can quietly reshape direction.
Lot did not move straight into destruction. He moved closer. His tent faced toward a place that looked attractive and promising. The land appeared productive. The decision made sense on the surface. Yet proximity did the work over time. What he tolerated nearby eventually became where he lived. Spiritual danger rarely begins with relocation. It begins with positioning.
You understand this pattern. Choices about where you spend time, what voices influence you, and what environments you allow yourself to linger in all shape your heart. Being near sin can feel manageable because you tell yourself you are still in control. Over time, closeness dulls caution. Familiarity lowers resistance. What once felt temporary starts to feel normal.
Scripture consistently warns that where you place yourself matters. Proximity influences desire long before it influences behavior. The heart adjusts to what it sees regularly. Compromise grows when boundaries become flexible. God’s wisdom does not call His people to fear the world, but it does call them to discern where they dwell spiritually.
