More Than a Name

"Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and don’t do the things I say?" - Luke 6:46

In Luke chapter 6, Jesus speaks to a crowd of people who called Him “Lord.” That word may sound normal to us now, but back then, it carried serious weight. To call someone “Lord” meant you recognized their authority. It meant you were choosing to follow, to obey, to submit. You did not say that word casually.

Jesus looks straight at the people who were calling Him Lord and asks them a question that still hits home today. Why do you call me that, but then ignore what I say? In other words, why do you declare my authority with your mouth but deny it with your actions?

This is where real faith begins. Not in what you say with your lips, but in what you do with your life. Some folks think “Lord” is just a title for Jesus. Like calling someone Pastor or Teacher. But Jesus made it clear. Calling Him Lord is not just respectful language. It is a confession that He holds complete authority over every part of who you are.

To call Him Lord and then live like you’re still in charge is to misunderstand what that word means. If He’s Lord, then He leads. If He’s Lord, then your plans, your preferences, your opinions, they all come under His rule. That is not always easy. But it is always right.

Take a moment today to think honestly. Do I treat Jesus like a consultant who gives advice I can take or leave? Or do I treat Him like the Lord of my life, the One whose word carries final say? This is not about being perfect. It is about being surrendered. It is about aligning your actions with your confession.

Saying “Lord” is not the goal. Living like He is Lord, that is where transformation starts.
