Protecting the Wrong Thing

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” – Matthew 6:21

There’s an old story about a man named Castlereagh, heir to a once-great estate in Ireland. After generations of influence and wealth, the family castle sat abandoned, its stones being stolen piece by piece by the locals. Hoping to protect what remained, Castlereagh hired a mason to build a wall around the property. Years later, when he returned, the wall stood strong and tall, but the castle was gone. The mason had used the castle stones to build the wall. He explained that it made no sense to go elsewhere when the finest materials were right beside him. So the very thing Castlereagh wanted to protect was torn down to protect nothing.

It sounds absurd. Who would trade something grand and valuable for a wall that served no purpose? But before we shake our heads too hard, we need to take a closer look at our own lives. Because we often do the same thing.

We spend our time and energy building walls to protect what we think matters: Our comfort, our image, our success. But in the process, we tear down what is most valuable. We sacrifice intimacy with God for busyness. We give up spiritual depth for worldly gain. We protect our reputation more than we guard our soul. And slowly, sometimes without even noticing, the very foundation of our life in Christ begins to crumble.

We do not mean to lose what matters most. We think we are doing the wise thing by building something secure. But Jesus reminds us that our hearts always follow what we treasure. And when our treasure is in the wrong place, our life can end up looking like that wall: Sturdy, impressive, and completely empty.

Friend, do not trade the eternal for the temporary. Do not tear down your walk with Christ to build a wall that serves no purpose. Ask God today to show you where your heart is. And if you find you have been building with the wrong materials, it is not too late to rebuild. Give Him what remains and let Him restore what was lost.
