Who Are You Really After?
"Then Jesus, knowing everything that was about to happen to him, went out and said to them, 'Who is it that you’re seeking?'" - John 18:4
It is a simple question on the surface. But when Jesus asked, “Who is it that you’re seeking?” He wasn’t just addressing the soldiers and officials in front of Him. That question still speaks to every heart today. Because whether we realize it or not, all of us are seeking something.
The crowd came with weapons and torches. They were prepared for a fight. But Jesus wasn’t hiding. He stepped forward and faced them head-on. He already knew what was coming. Yet He still asked, “Who are you looking for?”
Now think about your own life. Who or what are you really seeking? Are you chasing comfort? Control? Approval? Are you after a version of Jesus that fits your plans and doesn’t challenge your lifestyle? Or are you truly seeking the Jesus who steps forward in the garden and says, “I am He”?
It’s possible to follow the crowd and miss Christ completely. Judas knew where Jesus would be. He had been close enough to know the rhythms of Jesus’ life, yet still chose betrayal. Proximity doesn’t equal pursuit. You can be near spiritual things and never actually be seeking the Savior.
Jesus asked that question again after the soldiers stumbled backward. “Who is it that you’re seeking?” He wasn’t asking because He didn’t know. He was asking to make them think. And maybe He is asking you today for the same reason.
If Jesus stood in front of you right now and asked, “Who are you really seeking?” what would your answer be? Would you recognize Him as Lord? Or would you hesitate, unsure of what you’ve actually been chasing?
This is not a moment to stay on the surface. Let that question dig deep. Let it expose what needs to be exposed. Because the answer shapes everything. The peace, the direction, and the purpose you’re looking for are only found in Him.
