Let Go to Gain

"For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of me will find it." – Matthew 16:25

If we’re honest, most of us like control. We like to steer the ship, manage the schedule, and call the shots. We build our routines around predictability and comfort, and the moment something feels uncertain, we tighten our grip even more. But Jesus challenges us with something radical. He tells us that trying to save our lives, trying to manage and control every piece of it, will actually cause us to lose the very life we’re trying to hold onto.

That does not make sense on paper. In fact, if you brought that idea into a business meeting, folks would probably laugh you out of the room. But we are not talking about earthly logic. We are talking about spiritual truth. Letting go of control in exchange for commitment to Jesus is the only way to truly find life.

Look around our world today. Commitment seems rare. People bail on jobs, families, friendships, and even faith with little hesitation. But Jesus invites us into something far more meaningful. He invites us to lay down our personal agendas and follow Him with a surrendered heart. That might mean stepping into situations that don’t make sense. It might mean giving when it hurts or obeying when the outcome is unclear.

The apostle Paul understood this exchange well. In Philippians 3, he lays out how he gave up everything he once counted as gain for the sake of knowing Christ. He let go of prestige, status, and control because he had found something better. He found life in full commitment to Jesus.

This is not easy. But it is necessary. If we truly want to follow Christ, we must exchange our grip for His guidance. The reward is not just peace or purpose in this life, but eternal significance beyond anything we could imagine.

What are you trying to control? Are you willing to place that into the hands of Jesus? Because the moment you stop trying to save your life is the moment He begins to shape it into something far better.
