The Bold Ask
“Then Jesus answered him, ‘What do you want me to do for you?’ ‘Rabboni,’ the blind man said to him, ‘I want to see.’” – Mark 10:51
Every now and then in life, we get the chance to make a bold request. A shot at asking for something big. But even then, most people play it safe. We ask for things that seem possible, things that feel reasonable, things we think we might deserve.
Bartimaeus didn’t play it safe. He didn’t ask for coins or sympathy. He didn’t settle for something small when the Son of God was standing within earshot. No, he cried out. Loudly. Repeatedly. Even when people tried to shut him up, he got louder. This wasn’t just noise. This was desperation wrapped in faith.
When Jesus called him over and asked what he wanted, Bartimaeus didn’t hesitate. He didn’t say, “If it’s not too much trouble” or “Only if you think I’m worthy.” He said, “I want to see.”
That kind of request takes guts. But more than that, it takes faith. This man was blind. He had no power, no influence, no reason to believe he would even be noticed. But he asked anyway. And Jesus answered.
Too often, we settle for smaller prayers because we have small expectations. We underestimate what Jesus can do. We filter our asks through what makes sense, what seems logical, or what we think we’ve earned. But Jesus never asked us to come with perfect words or calculated requests. He invites us to come with faith.
So here’s the question. If Jesus stood before you today and asked, “What do you want me to do for you?” what would you say? Would you shrink back, or would you speak up with bold, trusting faith?
Maybe it’s time to stop whispering our prayers and start crying out like Bartimaeus. Maybe it’s time to bring God a big ask. Not because we’re worthy, but because He is.
