Total Dependence

"I am the vine, you are the branches. The one who remains in me and I in him produces much fruit, because you can do nothing without me." - John 15:5

We live in a world that praises self-sufficiency. We are taught from a young age to stand on our own two feet, to work hard, and to prove ourselves. So it is no surprise that many of us struggle to grasp what true spiritual dependence looks like. Yet, in Mark 10, we find a man who had no choice but to depend on Jesus, and that made all the difference.

Bartimaeus was blind. He could not pretend otherwise. There was no medical treatment, no surgical fix, no workaround. He could not hustle his way out of it. He could not buy his healing. His condition forced him to recognize something most of us ignore. His only hope was Jesus. When Jesus called him, he jumped up, left everything behind, and asked plainly for what he truly needed. He did not ask for money, comfort, or status. He asked to see.

That is the kind of clarity dependence brings. Bartimaeus was not distracted by lesser things because he knew his life hinged on what only Jesus could do. And the same is true for us, even if we try to mask it. We might be able to function without God in the day-to-day, but nothing of eternal value will ever be produced apart from Him. Jesus was crystal clear about this when He said, "You can do nothing without me."

So here is the question. Are you living like you really believe that? Or are you leaning on your own wisdom, effort, or goodness? Dependence on Jesus is not weakness. It is the very source of our strength. It is how fruit gets produced. It is how prayers are answered. It is how miracles happen.

The truth is, we are just as needy as Bartimaeus. We just do a better job pretending we are not. So what if we stopped pretending? What if we truly believed we could do nothing without Jesus? That kind of dependence changes everything.
