When Motives Get Misunderstood

"Jesus wept. So the Jews said, 'See how he loved him!' But some of them said, 'Couldn’t he who opened the blind man’s eyes also have kept this man from dying?'" – John 11:35-37

Have you ever done something with the right heart, only to have someone question why you really did it? That stings. Maybe you helped someone, and people assumed you had an angle. Maybe you gave generously, and someone thought you were trying to be impressive. Maybe you forgave someone, and others said you were just trying to make yourself look good.

If you’ve felt that kind of misunderstanding, you’re in good company. It happened to Jesus, too.

When He stood at the tomb of Lazarus and wept, some people were moved by His compassion. Others weren’t. They saw His tears and thought, “If He really loved him, why didn’t He stop this from happening?” Even as Jesus was preparing to work a miracle, people still questioned His motives.

And that’s the reality of following Christ in this world. When you live in a way that runs against the grain of culture, when you love people that others overlook, when you serve without getting anything in return, people will question your motives. Not because you’re wrong, but because it doesn’t make sense to them. The world understands transaction, not grace. It gets strategy, not sacrifice.

But just like Jesus, your job is not to convince everyone. Your job is to stay faithful. Your calling is to obey. The same people who criticized Jesus did not stop Him from raising Lazarus. And the ones who question your heart cannot cancel what God is doing through your life.

Keep walking with integrity. Let your actions speak louder than their assumptions. If your motives are rooted in Christ, they’re in the right place. Even when they’re misunderstood.
