When the Word is Found

“I have found the book of the law in the Lord’s temple.” - 2 Kings 22:8

The Word of God had been lost. Let that sink in. The very place where worship and sacrifice were supposed to happen, the temple of the Lord, no longer had His Word at the center of it. Generations of leadership had come and gone, and no one had noticed it was missing.

The high priest Hilkiah finds the book and gives it to Shaphan, the court secretary, who takes it to King Josiah. When it is read aloud, the king does not nod politely or file it away for later. He tears his clothes in grief and repentance. That was a sign in those days of deep sorrow and conviction. Josiah realized just how far they had drifted from God, and it broke him.

What is so powerful about this moment is how unexpected it was. Nobody was searching for a revival. No one was looking for answers. They were just cleaning up the temple and doing some renovations when the Word of God resurfaced. That tells us something important. Even when we are not looking for God, He still knows exactly how to reveal Himself.

When the Word was found, everything changed. It altered the course of Josiah’s life and the direction of an entire nation. That is what Scripture still does today. It is not just words on a page. It is a living, breathing revelation of who God is and how we are meant to live.

But the real question is, have you lost it? Not physically, maybe. Most of us have access to dozens of Bibles. The question is, have you lost it functionally? Have you stopped opening it, stopped reading it, stopped letting it confront and reshape you?

Josiah did not just hear the Word and feel bad. He acted on it. He tore down idols, reformed worship, and called his people to return to the Lord. You cannot respond to what you do not read. And you will not read what you do not treasure.

Maybe today is the day you rediscover the Word again. Dust it off. Open it up. Let it speak. Because when the Word is found, so is the way forward.
