Hunger for the Right Things

“Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy?” - Isaiah 55:2

We don’t usually call it hunger, but we all feel it. That gnawing sense that something is missing. For some, it shows up in the endless scrolling, the need to always be in the loop. For others, it’s chasing money, success, affirmation, or even just a sense of control. We’re all running after something, but most of us don’t slow down long enough to ask whether what we’re running toward can actually satisfy us.

That’s what Jesus calls out in John 6. The crowd had just watched Him multiply bread and fish and feed thousands. Now they come chasing after Him again, but not because they believe He’s the Messiah. They want more food. More signs. More temporary fixes. Jesus sees right through it. He says they’re working for “the food that perishes,” but they’re missing the true bread from heaven, the kind that lasts.

This isn’t just about physical food. It’s about the deeper hunger inside you. The hunger to be whole. The hunger to be known. The hunger to finally rest. And the hard truth is, most of us spend our lives filling that hunger with stuff that was never made to satisfy it. We end up exhausted, full but empty at the same time.

That’s why Jesus says in Matthew 6 to “seek first the kingdom of God.” You don’t have to chase everything this world promises. In fact, if you do, you’ll miss what really matters. He’s offering you something better. Himself. The only One who can feed your soul, quiet your fears, and fill the gap nothing else has been able to touch.

So take a second and be honest. What are you really hungry for? Where have you been going to get full? Because Jesus is not just another option on the table. He is the table. And He will satisfy your soul like nothing else ever could.
