Living a Life That Makes People Ask Why

"Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven" - Matthew 5:16

Life is full of surprises. Some bring joy. Others bring stress. You find a twenty-dollar bill in an old jacket and smile. You open an unexpected bill, and your stomach sinks. Surprise is just part of life. But have you ever thought about how your life might surprise someone else?

That’s the heart behind what Michael Frost calls living a “questionable life.” Not questionable in a shady or suspicious way, but in a way that makes people ask questions. Why do you respond with peace when things fall apart? Why do you serve people with nothing to gain? Why do you show up early, stay late, forgive quickly, and love boldly?

In a world where everyone is looking out for themselves, a life marked by kindness, humility, patience, and faith stands out. It is unexpected. It is surprising. It doesn’t follow the usual pattern. And that surprise opens the door to conversations that matter.

Jesus said we are the light of the world. Not hidden. Not faint. Visible. And not for the sake of attention, but so others would see our lives and be drawn toward the Father. A questionable life is not loud. It is consistent. It reflects Jesus in quiet, faithful, practical ways.

You do not need a platform to live this way. You just need to be intentional. The way you speak, the way you work, the way you listen, the way you respond in difficulty, these are all moments that can point people to something different. Something deeper.

Ask yourself this. Does your life raise questions in the minds of others? Not about your character, but about your hope? About your peace? About your joy? A surprising life can lead to a saving conversation.

So start simple. Be present. Be kind. Be generous. Let your life shine in a way that causes people to stop and wonder what makes you different. And when they ask, be ready to tell them.
